Benefits of Massage
What is Massage?
The term massage refers to the physical manipulation of
muscles, ligaments and connective tissue. It may include,
but not limited to, effleurage, pettrissage, tapotment
strokes and other Swedish movements. The main goal of
massage is to increase efficient body functioning,
massage can reduce stress, relieve fatigue, soothe
muscles and improve overall well-being.
Massage is an ancient art and science, which can be traced
back to its roots in the African Continent. From this
foundation, Chinese folk medicine, Greek and Roman
athletics and medicine, all evolved into specific
bodywork. Swedish massage was developed in the 1800’s.
It has now gained widespread acceptance as part of the
wellness movement, in which people are taking personal
responsibility for physical fitness, nutrition and stress
management. It is beneficial in workplace wellness and
health promotion programs to relieve chronic neck and
shoulder tension. Increasingly it is being used with
babies, the elderly, and others for the positive, relaxing
and health enhancing effects of touch itself.
Massage offers relief for sore and overworked
muscles that can result from many active sports.
The use of massage does not include diagnosis
of disease or prescription for treatment of disease.
However, massage therapists are trained to recognize
certain conditions for which massage is
contraindicated and will refer clients to medical
doctors or other health professionals when
appropriate.
